General legal rights - Years 7 - 12

Children and young people have a range of general legal rights that are available to all people under the law. In addition, they have a range of special protections or laws that may additionally apply based on their age e.g. youth offenders, age of consent, sexting and image based abuse, age of criminal responsibility, police powers, etc.

For this reason, it is essential that young Australians have:

  1. A general understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities; and
  2. An understanding of where to turn for help with the problems, particularly when legal assistance may be beneficial.

This module seeks to provide students with a general overview of some legal rights and responsibilities and to raise awareness about the options available to resolve such problems when they arise.
